The Bowie/Mitchellville (MD) Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was Chartered in October 2003. The Chapter Polemarch, Charles Exum, immediately granted approval to Silhouette Joan Crutchfield, a Silhouette in the Bowie/Mitchellville (BMAC) family, to organize a Silhouette Chapter.

Silhouette Crutchfield contacted the other Silhouettes of the BMAC Family to inquire of interest in organizing a Silhouette Chapter in support of the Bowie/Mitchellville Alumni Chapter. The response fulfilled the requirement for establishment of a Silhouette Chapter.

On October 18, 2003, Silhouettes Anita Roberts, Gloria Miller and Sandra Harvey met with Silhouette Joan Crutchfield to discuss the organization of a Silhouette Chapter. Silhouettes Crutiza Bryant, Andrea Jenkins, and Marlyn Hinkle expressed interest in organizing a Chapter but were unable to attend the planning meeting. These seven Silhouettes would become the Charter Members of the Bowie/Mitchellville Silhouettes Chapter.

In November 2003, Silhouette National 2nd Vice President, Geraldine Fowlkes, installed the officers of the newly organized Bowie/Mitchellville Silhouette Chapter;

  • Joan Crutchfield, President
  • Sandra Harvey, Vice President
  • Gloria Miller, Secretary
  • Anita Roberts, Treasurer
  • Crutiza Bryant, Chaplain

After installation, the first order of business was the vote to accept the Bylaws for the Chapter. The Bylaws were accepted as the official leadership document of the Chapter. On March 27, 2004, Bowie/Mitchellville Silhouettes Chapter was officially chartered by the Eastern Province Silhouettes. The Official Charter document was signed into record at the 2005 Kappa Conclave and presented to the Bowie-Mitchellville Chapter at the 2006 Eastern Province Council meeting.

Since 2004, the Chapter has provided bi-annual support to two local non-profit service organizations in Prince George’s County, MD; one, a women and children’s shelter, to aid with their plight to provide shelter and protection to abused and/or neglected women and children; and the other, a Christian Community Center that feeds the homeless and other less fortunate citizens. Some of our other projects/activities are

    • Student Achievement Awards program
    • Breast Cancer Awareness activities
    • Walk-A-Thons in support of The Power to End Stroke and Diabetes Awareness
    • Toy donations during the Christmas holiday to boys and girls in conjunction with the Bowie/Mitchellville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity; and many other community and social activities.

In 2005 and 2007, Bowie/Mitchellville Silhouettes received Awards at the National Silhouettes Meetings, for participating in National Silhouettes Projects. In 2005 the award granted was for Breast Cancer support, and in 2007, for our adoption of a Children’s Book Project. Books were donated to the Children’s Ward at Prince George’s County Hospital (MD).

In November 2008, we celebrated our Five Year Anniversary. Silhouette Jackie Massey, National Second Vice President, was our guest speaker. Silhouette Joan Crutchfield, Charter Member, was presented a plaque as Bowie/Mitchellville’s Outstanding Silhouette of the Year, and Silhouette Crutiza Bryant, Charter Member, was recognized for her outstanding contributions to the Chapter. Our special guest was a representative from one of our community service organizations. We also presented a monetary donation to BMAC in support of their A-Man Program.

Our membership has increased to 20 and our success is attributed to the hard work and dedication of all members. We are a Chapter united as one with one purpose. We remember and are proud of our past achievements and will continue to focus on the future of our Chapter. We will serve zealously with the intent and purpose of the National Silhouettes Organization in mind while remaining devoted to our Kappa Men of Bowie/Mitchellville (MD) Alumni Chapter and to Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
